after hours of struggling I have managed to get the piece of shit brakes back together on my wife’s Escape. What started as a simple pad and rotor job soon spiraled into a massive headache. Getting the rotors off was a pain in the ass as one of the e-brake retaining pins had given up on its duty.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
this meant that the shroud in the back had to be replaced, which was more or less just a sheet of rust. The hub had to come off
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
next was the caliper mounting bracket which was rust fused to the car.

after an hour of just beating on the thing it gave up and came off. Reassembly could begin. It wasn;t bad until I realized I had no idea how to get the hub back in, which required a special puller to get off. I asked my neighbor, who asked a friend and he said just put the axle nut back on and tighten it, which worked.

the disc and pads went on easy

ooo shiny!!!! The pedal still feels a bit squishy. I think next is the master cylinder and new fluid to try and finally end this problem. Also brakes on my brother-in-laws GF’s car. he was also a big help in this project. He mentioned getting a project car after all this. Time to get another 6-pack keg.

Nice! Good to see the rust finally gave up.
Have you tried marking the new rear discs with something to see if the pads were fully engaging?

well the drivers side went on days ago and had grown a few rust spots from not moving for a week. We went up the street and back. the discs were hot to the touch but the rust was still there.

just for clarification, you meant caliper not caliber , right?

Did you bleed the brakes? That might be the source of your squishy. Not sure if you actually removed the caliber and opened the brake line system, which if you didn’t you’re fine. Just the first thought I had.

inspect all your rubber lines and fully replace /flush/bleed your fluid if you didn’t do it completely this time. Only then would I consider the MC.

I did not open the lines at all but that has been suggested to do anyway.

Yeah it doesn’t hurt to do it even when just changing pads and rotors, especially when the end result is a squishy pedal. It should fix that right up. Sure as hell do it before replacing any other parts.

I find that parts don’t like to separate until you give up/go into a bezerker rage.

When I did the front struts on my care one bold would not hammer out until I just got pissed at it. When the rage was fully actualized I hit it once, after hammering on it for hours, and it moved. Yay! Similar for installation of new struts.

Was it squishy before? I recently did a flush on my wife’s car, old fluid came out a dark yellow. With new fluid in there, the brakes feel like they’re supposed to.

See, always a bigger hammer (or continuous beatings until morale improves.)
I’m in the process of swapping all the brakes on my sti, currently soaking it all in PB. Hopefully it doesn’t get dramatic. I’d post about it if I could ever figure out how!
